Aim:
To provide delegates with the tools to recognize, diagnose and manage patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
Objectives:
To increase awareness of these disorders in primary care particularly DCP's
To introduce a quick, easy exam protocol
To give guidance on patient explanation
To review treatment options
To facilitate triage of these patients
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, the delegates will:
• Be aware of the signs and symptoms of TMD
• Have up to date knowledge of the aetiology
• Be able to diagnosis patients with TMD
• Be able to decide on whom to treat and whom it is best to refer
• Be able to manage the TMD patient and know what treatments are available
• Be able to explain these conditions to patients and what reading material is available to them

Speaker:
Dr Vic Miller qualified as a dentist at University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 1977 and then studied craniomandibular disorders in the USA, Canada and Israel. From 1992 to 1996 he taught at the Hebrew University Hadassah school of Dental Medicine and also initiated the TMD clinic at the Soroka Medical Centre, Beersheva, Israel.
He headed the TMD clinic in the School of Oral Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg as well as setting up a TMD practice in that city. He was Board Credentialed in Pain Management by the American Academy of Pain Management in 2001. At present, he teaches in the Department of Adult Oral health, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, in London, UK, and also lectures on TMD to both under and postgraduates. He lectures widely in the field and is the author of upwards of 35 papers in peer reviewed journals.
